The unveiling of 'The Rethinker'

You don't present a work of art just like that. Such a piece of art deserved a fitting unveiling. And that's what our 'Rethinker' had.

Desch has been making pots from recycled plastic for many years. In the process, Desch provides clever ways by which those pots are 'seen' amongst all the rubbish to enable it to be recycled it once more. For example, products such as Recover® and D-TectPlus® are near-infrared detectable and float on water during the final phase of the waste separation process.

To express this technical art, Desch has created several artworks.

M.C. Escher is a well-known Dutch artist 000 Known among other things for his morphological and graphic etchings and engravings. Inspired by his morphological artworks, such as a fish turning into a bird, Desch has created the transition from a plastic bottle for fabric softener into a flower pot. With a nod to its origins, we call it 'The Descher'. This image is to be found on our premises in Waalwijk and in various means of communication.

Another artwork, made entirely from recycled pots, is a sculpture inspired by Auguste Rodin's 'The Thinker'. Full-sized and on a proper pedestal, this is a true work of art. We call him 'The Rethinker', as a reference to Rethink Plastics. This is an initiative of Plastics Europe and the Dutch Rubber and Plastic Industry Federation (NRK), with its focus on a fully sustainable and circular plastic value chain in the Netherlands.

A little background

For decades, Desch has been making pots and trays from recycled plastic. So doing, Desch is always looking for even smarter techniques for dealing with recycled plastic. For example, without losing their function, how can pots and trays be made even thinner, requiring less plastic? Or, during the recycling process, how can the removal of plastic pots from the plastic waste stream be improved even more? With all this innovative cleverness, Desch elevates the development and production of recycled plastic to a true art.

And, of course, we all know paintings by the famous great masters set in gold frames. Desch turned all that plastic waste into these frames. From a distance you won't see the difference, but with a closer look...
